Description
Cartoon by Commercial Appeal cartoonist Cal Alley of columnist Paul Flowers as Pan, 1955.
According to the story published in Flowers' 1967 compilation of his Commercial Appeal columns, The Greenhouse (p.79), in 1955 his portrait by Mississippi artist Leny Wacht was due to be unveiled at the 12th annual Greenhouse party at the Hotel Chisca on November 12 by former Memphis mayor Walter Chandler and Dr. Marshall Wingfield. As a prank, Alley slipped the cartoon under the cloth draped over the painting and his "picture" was revealed when the cloth was removed. A copy of the story with photographs is included.
Flowers later used the cartoon on his notecards (copy included).
