Description

Recently-freed prisoners of war at Rokuroshi Camp, Lt. Lamar Gillett (kneeling) and Lt. Jack Gates, demonstrate a method used by Japanese guards to make them confess to breaking the rules. They were beaten over the head with a stick and then slapped with a rubber soled shoe. Gates notes in his diary that this was one of two photographs taken of him by photographers with the U.S. Army in September 1945 as the prisoners made ready to leave the camp. Copy of a U.S. Army Signal Corps photograph.
