Description

The Great Torii of the Meiji Shrine in Tokyo, circa 1946. Note the Allied serviceman on guard beneath the torii, or gate. Dedicated to the former Emperor Meiji (1852-1912), it was one of the most important Shinto shrines in Japan. The original shrine building was destroyed during World War II.
