Letter written by J. Edward James, 96th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment, Cleveland, Tennessee, on March 11, 1864, to his sister Lizzie James Lamberson, Galena, Illinois.

He writes that the regiment has moved from Blue Springs to a camp on a hill three-quarters of a mile from Cleveland. The position is guarded by rifle pits and two field pieces, and a star-shaped fortification is under construction. He is unsure how long they will remain and there are rumors of being posted to Nashville to do garrison and provo duty. Notes that on February 22 he was with a six-mule team with provisions headed for Dalton and got stuck in deep mud in the woods. This proved fortuitous as a mounted squad of Confederate soldiers completely missed them because they went around the mud. “…you came very near having the pleasure of directing your epistles to your little brother to Libby [Prison], Richmond, Southern Confederacy etc…”
