Description

Port of Memphis grain elevator, 1378 N. Second Street, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1937. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.

This Public Works Administration installation introduced radically new structural procedures to Memphis. The metal roof, suspended from catenary steel tension cables, rises from earth-filled concrete bunkers to the top of the elevator housing. Its construction led to the establishment of Memphis as a major inland grain port.

Industrial architecture has a strength found nowhere else in the city. Practical, functional, and efficient planning and construction, and awesome scale produce structures with a sense of raw grandeur and purity.
