Description

Former Temple Israel Synagogue, Poplar and Montgomery, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1916. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.

Largely of Byzantine inspiration, this structure is stately in its well composed massing and refined proportions. The paired towers restrain the great arch of the front facade -of Sullivanesque derivation- as they contain arches framed within a larger arch.

As buildings in the Beaux Arts Style were being constructed, there followed an era of academic revivalism. Architects of these structures modeled their designs on a variety of antique precedents.
