Description
Hunt-Phelan Residence, 533 Beale, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1834. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.
The Greek Revival, a favorite style of ante-bellum Southern planters, arrived in Memphis during the boom years prior to Civil War. Symmetrical on both axes, these structures derived form and proportion from the ancient Greeks. As this style filtered through to provincial areas its implementation often became less than academically correct.
