Description

The Fontaine House, 680 Adams Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1870. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.

The engaged central tower, in combination with exaggerated quoins and tall slender windows accentuate the building's elegant verticality.

Buildings of the French-inspired Second Empire Style are boldly modeled and three-dimensional, nearly always involving a mansard roof with dormers, round or arched. Reserved for monumental public buildings and affluent residences, the ornamentation is extravagant as it is involved.
