Description
Porter Leathe Home, 850 N. Manassas, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1875. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.
Staggered brickwork around and between windows enhances the structure's length as it provides vigorous shadow lines, played against the vertically oriented stepped projections. The original building at the north end (1856- see window detail) is of simpler inspiration.
A visually involved style, the Victorian Italianate Style uses openings, often grouped vertically or horizontally, stringcourses, and heavily bracketed multiple cornices to implement animated ornamentation. Buildings are most often simply massed in a single block form.
