Description

CBI Nuclear Company, Presidents Island, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1968. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.

The immensity of this rather inexpensively constructed steel building overpowers the human scale- not unlike a Gothic Cathedral- as it accommodates over half a million square feet under one roof. The rotating stiff-legged derrick, which can hoist 1,148 tons, is used to load the massive steel nuclear reactors produced at the plant.

Industrial architecture has a strength found nowhere else in the city. Practical, functional, and efficient planning and construction, and awesome scale produce structures with a sense of raw grandeur and purity.
