Description

Hernando DeSoto Bridge, I-40 & Mississippi River, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1973. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.

Challenging science and art, bridges are a harmonious partnership of architecture and engineering. Monumental forms that dominate the landscape, their efficient designs are a great gateway-corridors through which we pass.

High strength steels and stronger concrete make this dramatic gateway possible. The bottom cord holds the great arches together. It is suspended from cables anchored to the arches. This enables long spans where the river is navigable. Over the rest of this broad crossing deep girders span piers of closer spacing.
