Description
Cardinal Machinery, 330 S. Parkway, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1947. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.
This structure imitates Frank Lloyd Wright's vibrant interplay of directional lines, even if only as an applied motif. The building is entertaining in its eclectic variety of Wrightian and Modern motifs.
Even as the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright came about as a highly personal expression, his influence - direct and indirect - on the course of Modern Architecture has been great. His work stressed natural use of native materials as he liberated interior spaces to flow smoothly one into another. His form and, indeed, his detailing were highly geometric.
