Description

Cronin, Baker, and Tindall Building, 339 Madison, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1912. Terracotta tile detail. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.

To sheathe and adorn the multitude of structures which were designed at the beginning of the twentieth century, architects turned to the ancient material terra cotta - hard fired ceramic tiles - which were mass produced in a variety of - often intricate - shapes and styles. These too were sold from catalogues by which the designer could assemble pieces with creative variety.
