Description
Pritchard Brothers Plumbing Building, 433 Madison, Memphis, Tennessee. Terra cotta tile detail. Built in 1903. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.
Tiles are molded in a variety of Greek-inspired motifs including egg and dart.
To sheathe and adorn the multitude of structures which were designed at the beginning of the twentieth century, architects turned to the ancient material terra cotta - hard fired ceramic tiles - which were mass produced in a variety of - often intricate - shapes and styles. These too were sold from catalogues by which the designer could assemble pieces with creative variety.
