Description
Office at Elmwood Cemetery, 824 S. Dudley Street, Memphis, Tennessee. Built circa 1880. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.
The only remaining example of 'Carpenter Gothic' architecture in the city.
Contrary to the light, skeletal nature of its medieval ancestry, Victorian Gothic architecture incorporates some of the more characteristic Gothic forms in massive earthbound buildings. Ornamentation is hardly fragile, often emphasizing the mass of the wall. Vigorous roof profiles and bi-chromatic combinations of materials further set this style apart from the earlier Gothic Revival.
