Description
St. Peter's Church, 90 Adams Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee. Built 1852. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.
The perpendicular formality of the Church played against the vigorously molded chancery forms a handsome ensemble. The chancery boasts some of the finest brickwork in the city; its involved geometry and deeply set windows offer strength and a sense of permanence. Note the well detailed cast iron fence.
Contrary to the light, skeletal nature of its medieval ancestry, Victorian Gothic architecture incorporates some of the more characteristic Gothic forms in massive earthbound buildings. Ornamentation is hardly fragile, often emphasizing the mass of the wall. Vigorous roof profiles and bi-chromatic combinations of materials further set this style apart from the earlier Gothic Revival.
