Description

Memphis International Airport, Memphis, Tennessee. Built in 1963. Architects: Roy P. Harrover and Associates. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.

Another elegant structure, the Airport uses steel umbrella columns- formerly used only in warehouse construction- to economically span huge areas with Gothic delicacy.

Called The New Formalism, these structures are free-standing and complete in themselves- rather temple-like- with symmetrically balanced elevations and regular, strongly defined skylines. Screens of cast stone or concrete are popular. Refined, emphasizing its structural derivation, this architecture reflects the grand imperial attitude of America during its Camelot days.
