Built by Eli Rayner as the manor house of his 2000-acre cotton plantation, it exhibits some Egyptian Revival influence in the treatment of its columns.

The Greek Revival, a favorite style of ante-bellum Southern planters, arrived in Memphis during the boom years prior to the Civil War. Symmetrical on both axes, these structures derived form and proportion from the ancient Greeks. As this style filtered through to provincial aeras its implementation often became less than academically correct.
