Description
Commercial Buildings, Main Street between Union and Gayoso, Memphis, Tennessee. Built around 1905. Photographer: Alan Karchmer. © Alan Karchmer.
Following improvements in steel technology and steel skeleton construction, buildings in the Commerical Style appear taking on clean and simple structural lines. Characterized by flat roofs, repetitive facades and slight cornices, the style, locally was influenced ornamentally by the various stylistic revivals that began to emerge about this time. Even so, one can clearly see the emergence of unadorned, functional, structurally expressive design. Windows are often of the Chicago Style- large plates flanked by smaller windows. Solid areas of the facade- columns and spandrels- are often sheathed in ornamentally cast Terra Cotta.
