Description
James A. Matthews (on the left) standing in front of an airplane "94, S.C. 2563", with an unknown man at Taylor Airfield in Montgomery, Alabama, undated (circa 1918).
Matthews was a government field auditor in the Machine and Repair Division for the Department of Military Aeronautics at Taylor Field during World War I. The War Department established the Aircraft and Engine Repair Depot #3 in Montgomery on the site of the former Wright Brothers flying school at Taylor Airfield. Besides the flight school, facilities at the airfield included the post headquarters, 16 hangars, repair shops, warehouses, barracks, and a hospital.
