Description

Rear view of Methodist Hospital on Union Avenue, Memphis, Tennessee, near completion in 1924, with the nurses' quarters to the far right and laundry and sanitizing department in the center.

The hospital, founded in 1918, had two previous homes: the small Lucy Brinkley Hospital at 855 Union Avenue, and the building on Lamar Avenue that became the Veterans Administration Hospital 88 in 1922. The hospital originally did not have an ambulance system, relying instead on funeral homes' ambulance services to get patients to emergency care.
