Description

Hurricane Joan hit the Caribbean and Central America in October 1988 with storms lasting for almost two weeks. The majority of the destruction was in Nicaragua and came shortly after an armed conflict in the region had started to cool off. The hurricane destroyed much of the infrastructure in Nicaragua, contributing to a recession that was already underway. Photograph was taken by Mary Ruth Robinson and featured in “The African Connection: Images from the Americas” exhibition in 1991.
