    Description

    Engraved illustration of the Carnival at Memphis, Tennessee, from page 657 of "Scribner's Weekly", Vol. 8. No. 6, dated October 1874. Memphis staged its first Carnival to celebrate Mardi Gras in 1872 and held parades and balls during the season through the 1870s until the yellow fever epidemics at the end of the decade devastated the city and the event slowly ceased to exist.
