Description
“View From upper deck of the H.R.W. Hill, Memphis, Tenn. Oct 7th, 1859. The Bluffs at the Landing.” Photographic copy of a pencil drawing of the Memphis bluffs from a boat on the Mississippi River by Alfred Brown Peticolas. The original sketch is in the collection of the Virginia Historical Society. Peticolas was born in Richmond, Va., in 1838, and was raised in Petersburg. After reading law at the Amherst County Court House, he was admitted to the bar in September 1859. He then moved to Victoria, Texas, working as a lawyer until joining Riley’s Regiment of Sibley’s Brigade in September 1861. He returned to Victoria after the war, married twice and had three surviving children. He was also the local newspaper editor from 1881 to 1888. He died in Victoria in 1915.
