Description
Anchor Line Wharf on the Mississippi River, probably at Memphis, Tennessee, undated.
The Anchor Line was a steamboat company that operated a fleet of boats between St. Louis and New Orleans between 1859 and 1898, when it went out of business. Originally called the Memphis and St. Louis Packet Line, it adopted the anchor as its symbol in 1874 and then became known as the Anchor Line. The volatile river, competition from railroads and the 1896 St. Louis tornado that destroyed several of its boats ultimately led to the company's demise.
