Image of the engraving on a bullet recovered from the U.S.S. Cairo, circa 1970. It reads: J.R. Anderson & Co., Tredegar Iron Works, Richmond, Va., 1861. Joseph Reid Anderson (1813-1892) operated the largest producer of iron, cannon and munitions for the Confederate government during the Civil War. Photographer: Dr. David Hiley.
The U.S.S. Cairo was an ironclad gunboat that sank in the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, on December 12, 1862. It was raised, stored at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula from 1965 to 1977, and is now displayed at a museum in Vicksburg.
