Description
A 32-page booklet titled "Your American Home Service Manual" published by Lowenstein's department store in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1943. It contains advice on how to manage a household economically and efficiently despite the challenges of World War II. Elias Lowenstein emigrated to Memphis in 1854 and the firm he headed, B. Lowenstein and Bros. department store, was prominent in Memphis for 125 years. Their first store was at 26 Main but in 1924 Lowenstein's moved to a large building on the site of the old Peabody Hotel at 27 South Main. In 1956 Lowenstein's purchased Bry's at 99 North Main and in 1962-1964 they demolished the Bry's building and built Lowenstein's Tower. Lowenstein's closed and was liquidated in 1981.
