The West Tennessee Historical Society based in Memphis, Tennessee, can trace its roots back to 1857 but adopted its present name in 1935 with Dr. Marshall Wingfield becoming the first president. Its collection of historical materials was transferred to the University of Memphis in 1974. The collection includes letters, ephemera, photographs, published material and artifacts on the history of Memphis and West Tennessee.
