Description
Four-page typescript account by Gabriel A. Moreland (1889-1979) from New Site, Prentiss County, Mississippi, of the 114th Field Signal Battalion, describing his service in the U.S. Army between leaving Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, in August 1918 to his preparing to leave France in April 1919. Moreland's son believes the account was written in France. The 114th Field Signal Battalion was first organized at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, on November 9, 1917. The battalion left Camp Beauregard on August 12, 1918, for Camp Mills, New York, and sailed for France on August 22. After serving in France, the battalion left Marseilles for New Jersey on April 19, 1919, and the southern soldiers left Camp Merritt for home on May 16, 1919.
