Description

A 104-page booklet compiled by Municipal Librarian Louise Gambill and published by the City Commission of Memphis in 1945 titled "City of Memphis: Civic Progress 1940-44". The booklet was an effort to inform Memphians of the accomplishments of the City Commission during its 1940-1943 term and the benefits and opportunities available to them. The activities of the different departments such as Fire, Police and Public Works are presented along with information on city schools, hospitals, libraries and other amenities. One section is entitled "City in Wartime". A companion booklet titled "Benefits and Opportunities for Colored Citizens of Memphis, Civic Progress 1940-1944" was published focusing on the African American population of the city.
