Description

Program for the Memphis State University Blue-Gray Spring football game played at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium, Memphis, Tennessee, on April 7, 1978. It was designated Bill Crumby Appreciation Night. Crumby was a sophomore defensive back in the Tigers team that played the University of Southern Mississippi on October 29 the previous year where he suffered an injury that left him a quadriplegic. After a year of rehabilitation, he returned to Memphis State to complete his degree and later became a successful businessman. Crumby died in 2000. His number 39 jersey had been unofficially retired after the 1977 game but on his death the number began to be assigned to a Memphis Tiger once again; always a defensive back, and always a walk-on.
