Description
A worker in Pascagoula, Mississippi, keeps the hull timbers of the U.S.S. Cairo moist to preserve them, circa 1970. (Another image included). Photographer: Dr. David Hiley.
The U.S.S. Cairo was an ironclad gunboat that sank in the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, on December 12, 1862. It was raised, stored at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula from 1965 to 1977, and is now displayed at a museum in Vicksburg.
