    Description

    Iron machinery from the U.S.S. Cairo, possibly the paddlewheel, Pascagoula, Mississippi, circa 1970. Includes closeup. Photographer: Dr. David Hiley.

    The U.S.S. Cairo was an ironclad gunboat that sank in the Yazoo River north of Vicksburg, Mississippi, on December 12, 1862. It was raised, stored at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula from 1965 to 1977, and is now displayed at a museum in Vicksburg.
