Higbee School, Memphis

Higbee School, Memphis

Publications of the Higbee School for young women in Memphis, Tennessee, that was established by Jenny M. Higbee (1839-1903). Higbee taught at St. Mary's School and then the Court Street Female High School until she was recruited to head the Presbyterian Grammar and High School. In 1878 she opened her own school in the Robertson Topp mansion on Beale Street which became The Higbee School in 1882. A new building was constructed next door on the corner of Beale and Lauderdale to accommodate the expanding school. The school survived Higbee's death in 1903 under two of her teachers, Hattie L. White and Mary E. Pim, but closed in 1914.
