Early Memphis Newspaper Indices
Publication Date

Abstract
This index is a complete revision of the earlier indexes and incorporates many corrections to subject headings and proper names. Primary consideration has been given to indexing articles which dealt with local or regional events. Some national events were covered, especially when they directly affected Memphis or were considered important by the local editors. Selected advertisements are also indexed. In 1890, the "Memphis Appeal" absorbed the "Memphis Avalanche" to become the "Memphis Appeal-Avalanche". In 1894, the "Memphis Appeal" merged with the "Daily Commercial", founded in 1890, to become the "Commercial Appeal".
