The Metro tournament was played at the Mid-South Coliseum, Memphis, Tennessee, March 4-6, 1982. Memphis State University had a bye in the first round and defeated Virginia Tech 71-70 in the semifinal. The Tigers defeated the University of Louisville in the championship game, 73–62, to win their first Metro tournament.

Memphis State College vs New York Celtics basketball program, 1941
A program of basketball games played at Memorial Gymnasium, Memphis State College, on February 18, 1941, and a clipping on the game from the "Memphis Press-Scimitar" the following day. The feature game was the New York Celtics (Pro-Champs) vs Memphis State College (Memphis Collegiate Champs). The Tigers lost to the World Champion Celtics, 48-43. The "Memphis Press-Scimitar" described the game "as uproariously ridiculous a contest as Memphis has ever seen." For three full quarters, Celtics forward Davey Banks and crew gave a dazzling exhibition and scored almost at will to simply maintain their lead. Midway through the fourth quarter and leading by eight points, the Celtics famed comical circus went into action. At one point, Banks played for the Tigers and even the referee, Marion Hale, scored a basket for the home team. Other games that evening included: Treadwell Jrs. vs Teachers Training School (Treadwell won 18-16) and, Grand Junction, Tennessee, vs Messick High School (Grand Junction won 28-19).

Program of the 20th National Invitation Tournament of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association held at Madison Square Garden in New York City in 1957. Memphis State College was one of 12 teams competing in the tournament and was runner up to Bradley, losing 84-83 in the final.

Program of the 23rd National Invitation Tournament of the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association held at Madison Square Garden in New York City on March 10, 1960. Memphis State University was one of 12 teams competing in the tournament. Providence College beat Memphis State 71-70 in the first round.
