Description

Platoon 41, 19th Battalion, Naval Training School, Tucson, Arizona, 1944. Cecil Humphreys is in the center of the second row from the top. His fellow trainees signed the verso. Humphreys, later president of Memphis State University, enlisted in the U.S. Navy in early 1944 and, after training in Arizona and at the gunnery school in Norfolk, Virginia, he volunteered for training with the scouts and raiders. After training in Florida, he went to Advanced Naval Intelligence School in New York and then served in the Pacific in Okinawa, the Philippines and New Guinea.
