Description
A cartoon drawn by Memphis "Commercial Appeal" cartoonist Cal Alley celebrating the change in status of Memphis State College (Memphis, Tennessee) to Memphis State University in 1957. The drawing is inscribed by Alley to J. Millard Smith, the president of the university. Governor Frank Clement signed the Bill approving the change in status for Memphis State College on January 24, 1957, and Memphis State University came into being on July 1, 1957.
