Description

Translation of "Bericht aus und über Amerika", a publication written by Johann Gottlieb Häcker from Saxony, Germany, to persuade his countrymen to emigrate to Morgan County, Tennessee, where he planned to develop two German communities near an existing German and Swiss settlement at Wartburg. The report gives a detailed description of the proposed settlements and addresses the problems immigrants may encounter. Häcker's work is translated with an introduction and notes by Richard B. O'Connell, Professor of German, Memphis State University.

Includes notes on two recent collections added to the archives: "Search for meaning in Memphis," by J. Beifuss (pp. 75-79); and "Papers of John Faulkner" (pp. 81-84).

Note. The Report is published in two parts: the first in this bulletin and the second in MVC Bulletin 4.
