University of Nashville Medical Department announcements, 1851-1853

The First, Second and Third Annual Announcements of the Medical Department of the University of Nashville in Nashville, Tennessee, for 1851 to 1853. The university was founded as Davidson Academy in 1785 and became Cumberland College in 1806. In 1826 the college became the University of Nashville. From 1874 to 1895 the medical department united with the Medical Department of Vanderbilt University, and from 1909 to 1911 it joined with the Medical Department of the University of Tennessee. In 1911, it merged with Medical Department of the University of Tennessee to form the University of Tennessee College of Medicine.

The "Washington Gazette" newspaper, Washington, D.C., was published by George Washington Alexander (1829-1895), formerly commandant of the Confederate military prison Castle Thunder in Richmond, Virginia, from 1862 to 1864.

Your American Home Service Manual, Lowenstein's, Memphis, 1943

A 32-page booklet titled "Your American Home Service Manual" published by Lowenstein's department store in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1943. It contains advice on how to manage a household economically and efficiently despite the challenges of World War II. Elias Lowenstein emigrated to Memphis in 1854 and the firm he headed, B. Lowenstein and Bros. department store, was prominent in Memphis for 125 years. Their first store was at 26 Main but in 1924 Lowenstein's moved to a large building on the site of the old Peabody Hotel at 27 South Main. In 1956 Lowenstein's purchased Bry's at 99 North Main and in 1962-1964 they demolished the Bry's building and built Lowenstein's Tower. Lowenstein's closed and was liquidated in 1981.
